This island has been a part of my family life for a long time now. First my parents spent their holidays here every summer, then we had a house some 15 years ago that became a great meeting place for all of us. Flights were cheap, there was always a toothbrush and a whole lot of summer clothes stashed away if you decided to show up spontaneously.
We had some really great times hanging out together, listening to the sheep behind our wall ringing their bells, throwing fresh squid onto the BBQ and ending up with a rubbery mess (because really, no one knows how to grill a squid properly), driving down to the beach bright and early so we can sneak onto the car park closest to the water and watching the sun set from our roof terrace over the ocean with a tasty tasty glass of local Rioja in our hands.
Now the house isn’t ours anymore but we still go back. And we still meet up. It’s the time spend with my parents I enjoy the most because Mallorca makes us all a little more relaxed, a little more smiley and a little more open hearted. We go hike by the water and onto the mountains, we scramble across the scraggly rocks and bury our toes in the sand, we go out for Menu del Dia and still drink the local Rioja. It’s our happy place and I’m glad we have it.
